BIOGRAPHY
Barry Gutknecht has created, managed, and evolved technology in real-world
business for the past 20 years. Most recently he is the VP Information Security
at Morgan Stanley, where he authored the firm-wide Data Classification
guideline and drove the effort to implement firm-wide e-mail encryption. Before
that he was the VP Software Engineering at CYA Technologies, where he
directed both the Software Engineering and Product Management for the evolution
of 12 commercial enterprise software products. He has built and retained teams
through booms and busts, and understands the width and breadth of technology,
but is most excited helping business actualize technology's potential through
software.
His career spans the integration of the computer and software into the business
world. In the 1980's he wrote innovative real-time software on a mainframe.
In the early 1990's, he worked with small PC databases and built Local Area
Networks in insurance and banking. Later, his extensive Wall Street experience
earned him a Technology Leadership Award from Thomson Financial as he
led the effort to build IPO software for Wall Street Syndicate Desks. He has
designed and written research software for Scudder, Stevens & Clark,
designed cost basis software for Charles Schwab, conducted business process
analysis at Hambrecht & Quist, and integrated real-time data feeds
for Lehman Brothers in New York and London. As the Director of Engineering
at Business 2.0 magazine, he applied a software mentality to an expanding
website and within 6 months increased its performance 10-fold with $0 additional
expenditure in a reducing-staff environment.
He is an aggregator of business and technical goals and a leader in accomplishing
them. His unique style of management combines an innate ability to listen with
extensive technology experience and business acumen to produce innovative solutions.
He knows what inspires developers and keeps them motivated. He is familiar with
the grey areas of daily decisions that shape long-term direction, enjoys crafting
products over months and years, and thrives on hitting multiple goals at all
points along the way. Barry sees his career goals through the lens of repeated
accomplishments, constantly using his abilities to solve business problems and
increase revenue.
He enjoys time with his family, world history, golfing, and traveling. He graduated
from the University of Colorado, participated in Wharton’s first remote-learning
series for the Entrepreneur, and learned life’s lessons in Denver, New
York, and San Francisco. He lives with his wife and teenage daughter in Fairfield
County, Connecticut.
